What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old healing system that was founded in ancient India and it is still used in many places around the world today. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means Science or Wisdom of Life.
Ayurveda is a Holistic System that believes we are born in balance of the mind, body and soul. As we go through life our various life circumstances can throw our natural balance off. Such as diet, relationships, emotional turbulence or trauma and the environment.
According to Ayurveda, good health is dependent upon our capability to fully metabolize the nutritional, emotional, and sensory information that we ingest.
When something that we have ingested has not being properly metabolized it leads to toxicity that is stored in the body and/or mind.
Ayurveda teaches us that the toxins stored in the mind-body system lead to obstructions in the flow of energy, information, and nourishment, and ultimately contribute to illness and disease.
Ayurveda is an awareness based system that teaches us to look at how we are taking in the world through our senses and how this information affects us.
Ayurveda and Our Alignment With Nature
Fundamental to Ayurveda is the concept that human intelligence is not separate from nature’s intelligence. The force that governs the cells within our mind-body physiology is the same intelligence that orchestrates the changes of the seasons, the migration of animals and the movement of the stars. Because the same intelligence that flows in nature flows in every cell in our body, understanding the building blocks of nature allows us to better understand ourselves.
The Doshas- Your Original Mind-Body Balance at Birth
As mentioned above, Ayurveda believes we are born in balance of the mind, body and soul. This balance is distributed amongst what Ayurveda calls the Doshas.
There are 3 Doshas- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. This is how Ayurveda determines the basic nature of a human being. We are each born with a unique combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
The doshas are combinations of elements we know as Space, Air, Water, Earth and Fire. As we see in the environment around us, these elements can easily become off balance due to various influences and likewise within ourselves. Our awareness of these elements and their state of balance is needed to keep ourselves sound, sane and healthy.
Finding Our Balance
You've heard me mention the term awareness a few times now and this is key. By bringing awareness our own mind and body we are able to identify, eliminate and begin to choose food, relationships and environments that nourish and contribute to our health and well-being.
Ayurveda teaches us to not only understand our Dosha and how to bring balance to it but also how to look at the world around us differently and the ways in which we can begin to experience more happiness, grace and ease in our everyday lives.
